Here at Gray & Ehrler Orthodontic Specialists we are always excited for our patients who have finished their orthodontic treatment and are finally having their braces removed or when clear aligner treatment is complete. It’s a very exciting day for both the patient and the staff. However, after your braces come off, orthodontic treatment is not 100% complete. In order to hold your teeth in their new positions and keep them returning “home,” retainers must be worn routinely while the gums, ligaments and bones adapt to their new positions.
- The retention phase of treatment begins when your braces are removed and usually lasts for 24 months.
- Retainers should be removed before brushing your teeth.
- You should brush your retainers before placing them back in your mouth.
- If your retainer breaks at any time during treatment, please do not adjust it yourself. Call our office immediately to schedule an appointment.
It is very important that you wear your retainers according to the recommendations of Dr. Gray and Dr. Ehrler. In order to maintain your new smile and the new alignment of your teeth, we use Hawley retainers, Essix retainers and Bonded retainers.
